Aloha, Friend:
As the confusion and chaos of Trump 2.0 continues into its fourth week, I believe it remains critical to keep you as informed as possible about what’s really going on and why and what I think and am doing, and to give you every opportunity to ask questions and provide guidance.
To this end, this Monday the 10th I held a short-notice Tele-Talk Story to report to you and answer your questions. I’m deeply grateful to the over 15,000 of you who joined and the some 1,500 who sent in questions and comments.
Here is a replay of my talk story: https://youtu.be/Z7jDQGyLwNg?si=XjmTRBdZNa7llzH2. The first half hour is my report to you and the second hour is me answering your questions. This is an outline of my report:
-What are the basics (our system of government, separation of powers and checks and balances).
-What has President Trump done in his first three weeks.
-What checks and balances if any are operating on the President.
-What is going on in the big picture.
-What more can we expect.
-Where does Elon Musk fit in.
-What do I think and what am I doing.
-What can you do.
-Concluding thoughts and further resources.
-How to contact me.
This followed on my six in-person districtwide Talk Story community meetings the last week of January. Here’s a video summarizing those meetings: https://youtu.be/D9eYBBKE63E?si=VKOPD0qfHx8uAkWH.
As to President Trump’s numerous executive orders and other pronouncements, this web site lists and summarizes them: https://www.hklaw.com/en/general-pages/trumps-2025-executive-orders-chart.
As I reported in my Tele-Talk Story, the only real check and balance on President Trump’s actions at present is the federal courts, which have halted several administration initiatives as illegal and unconstitutional. This site tracks the status of these over forty cases at last count: https://www.justsecurity.org/107087/tracker-litigation-legal-challenges-trump-administration/.
As I said at the conclusion of my Tele-Talk Story, these are very dangerous times for our country, not just because of our failure to address severe challenges and deep divisions, but because many of the actions of the Trump administration amount to a collective attack on the foundations of our government.
I welcome difficult policy debates and decisions on the issues of our time and will keep pursuing nonpartisan common-sense problem solving. But I will not ignore, deny, rationalize or defend illegal and unconstitutional actions that threaten the fabric of our country.
If you have questions or concerns about what’s going on and why, I ask that you view my Tele-Talk Story replay. I continue to welcome your further questions and guidance, and will do all I can to keep you informed further as we continue through this uncertain, confusing, chaotic and dangerous time.
