CASE STATEMENT ON TODAY'S INAUGURATION OF PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN AND VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS

Today's inaugural ceremony took place at the United States Capitol for the 46th President of the United States.

(Washington, DC) - Congressman Ed Case (HI-01) made this statement following his attendance at today’s inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris at the United States Capitol:

“Today, our 46th President called on all Americans to help ‘restore the soul and secure the future of our country’.

“So needed, so appropriate in this difficult time of crisis and division, especially just two weeks after a violent assault on the very foundations of our democracy.

“Each of the 59 Inaugurations in our history has been far more than an event. It is a renewal of our vows to our country and to each other, a beacon to the rest of our world of what is possible.

“For me, bearing personal witness for those I represent to this peaceful transition of power we have honored for centuries, it was a day of mixed emotions.

“Sadness that deep division and polarization had driven us to celebrate our traditions behind fences, barbed wire and troops.

“But ultimately profound appreciation, respect and pride in our country, our institutions and our democracy.

“And a renewed commitment to reach out and listen to, understand and include all voices.

“Inaugurations are new beginnings, and that of President Biden and Vice President Harris is uniquely so.

“We cannot squander this one and, with mutual effort, we won’t.”
